In some cases, exercising too much can be as bad as not exercising at all. Believe it or not, it’s possible to develop an exercise addiction. With this condition, a person compulsively exercises and feels obligated to complete a certain amount of exercise each day. It can become an unhealthy obsession that is mentally and physically consuming and difficult to overcome.

Exercise experts believe that exercising for half an hour each day is more than enough to keep you in good health and prevent diseases such as high blood pressure, the onset of type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity. Exercising too much can invite health complications.

Harmful Effects of Too Much Exercise

Over-exercising can have the following negative effects on the body:

  • Injuries, such as strains to the ligaments, tendons, bones, and joints.
  • Loss of lean-based muscle mass, especially if your body lacks proper nutrition.
  • Strained heart muscles that could lead to weakening of the heart and, ultimately, to heart failure.
  • A depleted immune system. When your immune system is compromised, you will be prone to infections and illnesses.
  • Interrupted sleep. Exercising too much keeps your adrenaline pumping continuously. You may lie down at night only to find your mind racing away as you toss and turn, unable to fall asleep.
  • Eating disorders, such as bulimia or anorexia. If carried too far, too much exercise can spill over into other aspects of your physical and mental health, causing you to develop eating disorders that can wreak havoc on your health.
  • Women who exercise too much may suffer from amenorrhea, which is the cessation of the monthly period. This can ultimately take a toll on bone density.

If you exercise regularly, when is exercise too much? Unfortunately, that’s hard to define because every person is different. If you feel your passion for exercise turning into an obsession that distracts you from other good things in your life, consider dialing it back and seeking professional help if needed. Exercise is essential—but always in moderation.
